About Me 👨🏫
My name is Scott Hebert and I have been a teacher since 2009. I have taught my entire career in Alberta, Canada spanning the cities of Calgary, Fort Saskatchewan and Sherwood Park. I have taught K-9 but recently, have focused primarily in middle school with grade 7 and 8.
When I am not teaching, I am a proud dad to 2 amazing kiddos. They are the most important thing in my life and provide the best possible feedback one could ever ask for.
I am a passionate and driven teacher that believes Physical Education & the Sciences are among the most important classes a student can take as it not only promotes the importance of healthy active living but encourages the development of a strong social skill set and study foundation for critical thinking as well.
I have completed all of my education in Sudbury, Ontario, Canada at Laurentian University where I received both my Bachelor of Physical and Health Education and Bachelor of Education. I graduated with Honours in both programs and was their "All Around Academic Student" award recipient in both my 3rd and 4th years of my degree.
All and all, my mission is to provide quality education in a safe, open, fun and playful environment because as Joseph Chilton Pearce, noted author and expert in the area of child development, stated: “Play is the only way the highest intelligence of humankind can unfold” and I could not agree more!
My educational journey has also been blessed with a few awards. I was named a Top 20 Teacher in Alberta via the Alberta Excellence in Teaching Award in May of 2013 and in 2015 my classroom won the Best Gamification in Education Project in the World via the World Gamification Congress! In 2017, I was named Laurentian University's Alumni of the Year in Human Kinetics. Finally, in 2020, I was honoured to be selected among the Top 50 finalists of the Global Teacher Prize, and the first teacher from Alberta ever selected.
I never set out for any reward or acknowledgement in education. All I have ever wanted to do was create a classroom where students could be themselves, and in turn, flourish. Simply put, school should be fun and we should not view play as the antithesis of learning because in reality, they go hand in hand!
My TEDx Talk
A great way to learn about gamification and my educational journey is my TEDx Talk. A great 20 minute summary of me and my speaking style.
The GTP Top 50
I was in total disbelief when I was selected to the Top 50 class of the Global Teacher Prize in 2020. One step closer to bringing gamification to all.
Public Speaking
I love meeting teachers and talking education. Public speaking leads to conversations. Sparking conversations in education is key in creating progress.
